About Us
Artist Statement
if and only if is an artist-based experimental theater collective focused on the collaborative generation of original work as well as the reimagining of classic texts. We seek to foster a nurturing artistic environment based on education and sharing, not only among theater artists, but composers, musicians, dancers, puppeteers, and visual artists as well. We are dedicated to the creation of a full theater experience - content-driven and aesthetically inventive.
Brief History
if and only if is the brainchild of Caitlin Michener, Nicole Pursell and Audrey Hailes. After graduating from the Experimental Theatre Wing of NYU, they needed a way to not only continue making work, but further their education as well. They sought out the help of many theater artists from their community to build a collective focused on the exchange of ideas, techniques, and the construction of new work. The name, if and only if, seemed appropriate for its interminable and conditional nature. It references not only the work of Anne Carson, but also the mathematical tradition and the art of the proof (which is, after all, what theater is all about).
